Reasons Why Schools Fail: Reality Check

February 16th, 2010 Nics Nguyen

I read this on a random blog as I was looking for something but I figure I would post up what I thought was interesting.  I would cite where I found it, but figured it would be best if I didn’t just this once.

I have been teaching in B. County public schools for 30 years. During that time, superintendents have come and gone, and the federal and state governments have come up with new objectives and mandates that we follow for a while as teachers follow the education trend of the day. Instructional practices change; they always have and always will. What hasn’t changed in 30 years is the tendency to blame teachers for our failing schools.

The B. County Board of Education and B.County public schools have not failed.

The apathy of parents in our community is why our schools are failing. The apathy and disrespectful attitudes of too many of our students is why we are failing.

We deal with what we are sent. We do the best we can. We do not want to raise our students, but for many of our students, we are raising them.

They come to school late without breakfast. We feed them breakfast.

They come dressed in dirty, wrinkled clothes. We go to the clothes closet and find them something clean to wear.

They don’t return homework or signed papers, so we work with them, since their parents won’t.

We teach them reading, writing, math, science, health, social studies, spelling, English, character lessons, manners, responsibility, resourcefulness, self-control, respect, etc.

Parents don’t teach their children that education is important and that teachers are to be respected, so these children become behavior problems.

We will have problems with our schools as long as we have problems with society. As society continues to unravel, so will our schools.

We can’t change the families these children come from. We can’t make them come to school. We can’t make parents be good parents.

Something to think about…
